Come learn about the rich history, activities and classes offered by the Finnish Hall!
This will be the first of a series of introductions and discussions with representatives of some of the religious and cultural organizations in our neighborhood. Future participants will include the Medhame Alem Orthodox Church, Church of the Good Shepard, Liberty Hill Baptist Church and the James Kenney Community Center.
The Finnish Hall has been a fixture in our neighborhood since the turn-of-the-century and is housed in a building designated a National Historic Landmark. Two of their representatives will be at the next meeting to talk about the colorful and rich history of the Finnish Hall and details about current and upcoming classes and activities to be offered.
At SONA’s last meeting we talked about what issues we as a group would like to explore during 1997. The items that ranked in the top five included, in order of ranking, 1) having people of different races and ethnic groups get to know each other better; 2) development and planning issues; 3) neighborhood beautification; 4) outreach to local merchants and 5) meeting the local churches and cultural organizations.
During our next meeting we hope to solidify the interest expressed in these issues by creating committees to help transform these goals into realities.

Development update-(Darcy Morrison and Diana Ooghe) Cody’s Bookstore on 4th Street, West Berkeley Plan revision, San Pablo and University intersection.
Formation of a tree planting group--Ilona or another representative from the Page Street group will discuss the formation of a committee to plant more trees in the neighborhood.
James Kenney Neighborhood Watch Group- (Alan Acacia) Report on last meeting.
SONA likes to promote the James Kenney Neighborhood Watch which is concerned with crime and safety issues. They meet regularly on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7 to 8p.m. The next meetings are March 13 and April 10.
We’re SONA and we meet about every six weeks in one of your neighbor’s houses. SONA is people getting together to make our part of town even warmer, friendlier, and safer than it currently is. We believe that the more people get to know one another, the better off we’ll all be!
