Second Annual Harvest Party is Saturday, October 10
We hope that many of our neighbors will turn out once again for a barbeque in James Kenney Park. Last year it was great to see so many people join together for an afternoon of food and fun. While many of you may rarely or never make it to a SONA meeting, we like having this annual outdoor event to meet more of you. This year's party will be held 2:00-5:00 pm at the Picnic Area. We plan to provide games for children and a limited amount of hamburgers, vegie burgers, hot dogs and sodas. If you'd like to spend some time getting to know and visiting with your neighbors, please come and bring a potluck dish to share. To help make sure we get a nice variety of food, here's what we have in mind for the potluck.

We're interested in hearing your ideas for making this event a success. We've been raising money but need more and will be taking up collections at the meeting. We also need more volunteers (grillers, food setup and replenishment, cleanup, etc.) to help make sure the event goes smoothly. Last year's volunteers said that working together with neighbors they'd just met was a great way to get to know each other.
Be sure to mark your calendars and remind each other to spend the afternoon at the Park on October 10.
The Latest on Traffic
Traffic counts conducted by the City in May 1998 showed almost 4000 cars per day using the Hearst/9th/Delaware corridor on the busiest day. On most days there were 2000-3000 cars. During the busiest parts of a day, there were 6 cars per minute, or a car ever 10 seconds! People are concerned about noise, pollution and safety issues, especially when so many drivers are in a hurry. Many of us believe the increased traffic is a consequence of congestion on on University and San Pablo Avenues. There are as many ideas about how to solve the problem as there are residents in the neighborhood, and it's clear that some of us are much more affected than others. But any solutions (such as more stop signs, removal of diverters, addition of diverters, lower speed limits, speed bumps, etc.) for those living in this traffic corridor will likely impact folks who may not currently experience traffic problems on their own streets. That means we all need to work together, with the City and possibly UC Berkeley, to agree on measures which will make our streets more livable for all. The Ethiopian Mehane Alem Orthodox Church is hosting its annual celebration of Meskel at James Kenney Park on Saturday, September 26.
The next James Kenney Neighborhood Watch meeting is Thursday, October 8, 7:00-8:00 pm at the Community Center, just south of the tennis courts.
